Full disclosure: The Channel is one of my all time favorite bands. I was introduced to them through a friend and downloaded the two songs they had available on mp3.com (the precursor to MySpace for bands). During the 15 or so years of their existence, The Channel has released 4 albums (with a 5th one due out this year) and their members have been involved in numerous musical projects: Golden Bear, Minorcan, Leatherbag, and The Deserters to name a few. They create a unique blend of music; mixing all the best elements of indie rock, folk, psychedelia, and sleepy bedroom pop into a wonderful concoction that would please even the most discerning palate.  We sat down with Colby and Andy from The Channel to talk about their upcoming album, Multi-Good and Services, and hear some music, both new and old, from the prolific songwriters.

All of The Channel’s albums are available on iTunes and Bandcamp: Tones Are Falling (2001), Personalized (2004), and the 2 disc Tales From A Two-Hill Heart / Sibylline Machine (2006). They’re all spectacular in their own way and worth your money, but if you only want to buy one, I’d recommend Personalized. It showcases the talent of three different songwriters and has a great Will Oldham cover to close it out.

Tis the season boys and girls: cheesy music, bad sweaters, and consumerism at its worst. And I love it, every bit of it. For a solid month, I walk around my house singing the holiday standards (much to the annoyance of my family) and watching every Christmas classic on TV. For the show this week, we compiled a list of our favorite Christmas songs and present them to you here for your aural pleasure. So gather ‘round the fireplace and sip on some cider, it’s Christmas!

  1. Sufjan Stevens - Get Behind Me, Santa
  2. Mount Righteous - Christmas Accordion
  3. The Invisible Strings - I Can Hear The Snow Falling
  4. The dB’s - Christmas Time
  5. The Magnetic Fields - Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree
  6. Otis Redding - Merry Christmas, Baby
  7. Paul Baribeau - Christmas Lights
  8. Samantha Crain - Breaking The Ice
  9. Leatherbag - Jesus Christ
  10. The Channel - Blue Christmas
  11. The Wave Pictures - I Love You Like a Madman
